“Aren’t we all [French] when you think about it?”

We are joined this week by the one and only Ryanof Rumor Flies! That’s right, we’re shamelessly turning the camera back on ourselves for a brief bit. Ryan sheds a little light on his editing/creative process and tools he uses to keep his shows rolling.

So this is a tad shameless, but how did you get into Rumor Flies and podcast production in general?

Some chump named Greg invited me onto his show to talk about steak and GOD'S then strong-armed me into doing a podcast covering similar topics. We clearly stay down the straight and narrow.

What sort of tools do you use to edit? You seem to do a bit of everything whenever we need you to, from episode cuts, to graphics work, to any song we’d need for virtually any occasion.

I exclusively use Ableton for editing because I've already sank way too much money into audio plug-ins for music. May as well use it for podcasts as well. For graphic work, I have a technique of taking a day to learn what I would need to do in photoshop to get the desired result, forget it as soon as I finish the project, then do it again next time we need a graphic. The music side of things is convenient for me because it's never a burden. It's pretty much replaced video games for me as a pass-time, and jingles are fun because you get to pack the most catchiness in a few seconds.

Shifting gears a bit, you are very passionate about issues involving bad actors, grifters, etc. centered around misinformation and duping the public. How and why did these issues become important to you?

Without going into a novella, I used to love conspiracy theories as a child and probably consumed most of the media from the people a disdain the most today. I think seeing a James Randi lecture as a kid really pulled me out of the "does it matter if nobody is getting harmed?" mindset. People get harmed from things most people wouldn't consider, whether it be physical, financial, or mental, and other people make money off of that harm. Not a fan of it.

What are some topics you want to revisit or explore that you haven’t yet?

I think I'm ready for a GMO episode sooner than later. I'd also love to try some more exposé style episodes on one specific person or phenomenon.

If you could go back and do one thing differently with the show, whether it is right at the start or before launching, what would it be?

Not bleep the curse words. Fuck PG-13. I also wish we hadn't walked on eggshells from the start. It may have originally helped us with getting people on board, but I feel that the leash prevented us from getting the fullest picture of things

Is Greg French?

Aren't we all when you really think about it?

Anything else you’d like to talk about?

High-powered flashlights.
